Sick-Days – Worn Out

Kurt Cobain famously wore a t-shirt saying ‘Grunge is dead’.  Well, I’m pleased to report that Grunge is alive and well and living in Brighton, England.

Sick-Days are a three-piece post-grunge band, who blend Grunge with Shoegaze to create a powerful, urgent and vital sound.  Sick-Days latest EP Worn Out has four beautifully crafted tracks that should appeal to anyone with a serious interest in rock music.  Here’s a quick rundown:

At Least I’m Not Dead starts gently enough with melodic vocals and jangling guitars, before a more pained vocal kicks in with a sense of desperation and despair.  The music transforms into a powerhouse of stress rock and distortion.

Perfect Headache further demonstrates Sick-Days vocal versatility.  Raspy and gritty one minute; melodic the next.  It brings a tenderness to the angst, akin to mixing concrete in a chocolate velvetier.  This is the most Nirvana-esque track on the album, and is guaranteed to get the pit bouncing.

Come II Mare is sung in Italian, but this is no Pavarotti piece.  There’s lyrics about love, fragility and isolation, but it’s not long before the heavy distortion kicks in and the valves are popping on the tube amps.

No Other Way starts out like a ballad; reminiscent of Stone Temple Pilots early work.  There’s almost a bluesy feel to this mid-tempo track.  There’s more melodic grit as the song develops, before a hard sprint through the finish line.

Sick-Days have captured the essence of Grunge and made it relevant for a post-Covid generation.  Long may they continue.
