Neoplastic – The Wolds

Hull based post-punk trio Neoplastic return with new single The Wolds. Singer and bassist Leo Joslin describes the song as “a love letter to the Yorkshire Wolds”. But this is no ditty of a folk song. Anyone expecting a Jethro Tull style Songs from the Wood track better grab a pair of ear defenders, because Neoplastic have a new take on serenading the British countryside.
The Wolds may take a loving look at one of the most picturesque parts of the Yorkshire landscape, but it does so with the kind of dark and foreboding tone that has become the hallmark of Neoplastic. The Wolds is both brooding and atmospheric; it’s as if the band have built a Wicker Man in the forest and are intent on dragging you into it.

It all starts with Tom Green-Morgan’s guitar work, which is full of torment and creates a sense of unease. It’s joyfully unsettling and is the perfect counterpoint to Oliver Witty’s minimalist drumming. Witty creates a solid groove, and is developing a reputation as a post-punk Charlie Watts. All this tees-up the perfect environment for Leo Joslin’s vocals, which add a wonderfully constructed psychological tension to the song.
Neoplastic deserve your attention. So this weekend, take a walk in the countryside, put your earbuds in and give them a blast.
