PØRTERS might just have the best four-part vocal harmonies since ABBA.  Take a listen to the opening track ‘Where are we going?’ from the band’s latest EP ‘Motion Without Direction’ and you’ll see what I mean.  This is a track of such exquisite beauty that it should be in an art gallery.  ‘Where are we going?’ also has a textural structure similar to that developed by Pink Floyd.  You get a sense of this during Kieran Taylor’s wonderful guitar solo – textbook David Gilmour.

Tracks two and three from ‘Motion Without Direction’ could have been lifted straight from the soundtrack of ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’.  Maria Winter’s vocals are soulful, lush and create an iconic sound.  ‘The Thrill’ has another nifty guitar solo, and ‘The Devil I Know’ employs a mid-song shift of pace that elevates the track from whisky bar storytelling to foot stomping rock classic (tip of the hat to keyboardist Nick Gladdish for the hammering piano work).

The EP concludes all too soon with ‘Recover’, another classic rock track with a catchy as hell chorus.

PØRTERS songs are polished and poised.  The music may have a retro feel to it, but the band offer a contemporary take on classic sounds, and for that alone they deserve your attention.
