Baby Shower – Winona Ride or Die

Baby Shower return with an epic new single ‘Winona Ride or Die’.  For those unfamiliar with the Melbourne trio, they take the humour of Men at Work and blend it with the raw punk energy of Amyl and the Sniffers (two other Melbourne bands – there must be something in the water).

‘Winona Ride or Die’ has a signature sound that could, with the right airplay, resonate with audiences on a global scale.  The band consists of Alison Erlanger on vocals and a mean electric Uke (not a phrase you hear every day), Sean Kirkpatrick on vocals/bass and Sunny Dial on drums.

The success of Baby Shower’s ‘Winona Ride or Die’ lies in the interplay between the distinct vocal styles of Erlanger and Kirkpatrick, and the melodic structure around them.  Erlanger’s wonderfully smart intro is full of brat mockery and self-awareness.  This leads into Kirkpatrick’s punky mid song change of pace, which feels liberating and is as catchy as hell.  The song also benefits from some excellent light touch production, with a nice vocoder style effect early on.

Baby Shower are far from being on the borderline of borderline.  With ‘Winona Ride or Die’ they have truly produced a musical dream.
