The Meat Sweaters – Fuck City

The Meat Sweaters, The Meat Sweaters, The Meat Sweaters – shouts vocalist Pete Fraser before the band kicks in to a no holds barred version of ‘Fuck City’ at the Signature Brew venue in London. Dressed in a thrift store tuxedo, the bare footed singer belts out the lines with the conviction of an evangelical preacher. It’s part of a fun (and full on) set that leaves the capacity crowd shouting for more.

The Meat Sweaters are a British band with a Swedish twist, and a penchant for power-nihilism rock. ‘Fuck City’ is the perfect embodiment of their work. It’s a technicolour portrayal of paranoia and the insecurities that come with it. ‘Fuck City’ is the perfect antidote to the American west coast psychobabble that urges us to believe we could, and should, achieve anything we want.
There are comparisons a plenty between The Meat Sweaters and bands such as Devo and Talking Heads. The New Wave sound is certainly present in The Meat Sweaters music, but there’s something more telling; something more revelatory in their work. ‘Fuck City’ shows that it’s ok not to be ok, and in doing so it somehow makes you feel better about life. Bizarrely, The Meat Sweaters might just turn out to be the most positive thing out there – not that they’d give a fuck.
