TRUNC – Figure In The Fog

TRUNC are here once again to lift us out of the gloom, or in this case the fog.
They say the definition of crazy is that you’ve seen things nobody else has. Does that mean that if you think somebody else is out there, but you never get to meet them you’re crazy? Perhaps, but what if you’re someone clever enough to write a song about someone thinking they’ve seen somebody else out there. Does that mean you’re crazy? I think not. Before we disappear down an existentialist rabbit hole, let me explain. The singer/songwriter/producer/musical deity named Martha Phillips is as skilled a songwriter as you’ll find in the world today. Anyone with even a passing interest in TRUNC’s music will acknowledge that Martha is known for her starkly personal lyrics and unconventional compositions. If those words seem vaguely familiar, it’s because they’re the same as those written about Joni Mitchell (see here).
TRUNC’s latest release is ‘Figure in the Fog’. If fun is best described as the unknowing acceleration of time, then this is going to be the best 4 mins and 5 secs of your day. It’s not a romping Christmas ditty, quite the opposite in fact. However, the solace you’ll find from a fellow soul articulating the mental challenges of darker days is more heart-warming than a cup of Horlicks. The beat will also have you booging around the house better than any kitsch, fake snow induced, Xmas jingle.

Credit for the rhythm and beat in the studio goes to Martha’s musical brothers Sam Hugh-Jones (guitar) and Tom Palmer (drums). These three artists have been together since their school days, and simply put – it just works.
It’s treacherous to think of a person as more than a person, but in Martha Phillips case we have no choice – she really is that special.
